EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

Periodically in the media, materials related to the need for an early tsunami warning system appear. There is a lot of controversy on the subject, and it is even said that it is not possible to create such a mechanism. Is it possible, however, to have such a tool, but not for tsunami warning, but for warning of serious public shock?

In the period January-March 2019 several Roma protests (one in Sofia, one in Germany, one in the Czech Republic, three in Belgium, two in the Netherlands) were organized by Bulgarian Roma, who drew attention to the fact that anti-Roma moods and persecutions against the Roma in Bulgaria are becoming more frequent and the processes recall the early years of Nazi Germany. A few months ago I also drew attention to the problem by uploading a few photos to the social network for such a signs in Bulgaria. There were, of course, reactions that these are isolated cases, however, that it is probably a small part of society, which, for example, celebrates the birthday of Adolf Hitler and unpacks his posters.

In recent months, more information has emerged in this direction, this time from Germany, which reports an increase in the number of crimes committed by right-wing extremists and a link to the suspect for the murder of Walter Lübke with the neo-Nazi organisation “Combat 18 “.

However, it is rather frightening the possibility that the Roma might not exaggerate in this respect, and in some cases they might be the first ones to respond to the upcoming serious problems in society if the following facts are taken into account.

THE ROMA AND THEIR ELECTRICITY BILLS

Long before 2013 (if I’m not confused about 2000), Roma in different neighboorhoods, including my native Vidin, are reporting against their electricity bills. You probably can figure out by yourself what kind of a mockery among the stereotype-loving majority created this information.

But in 2013, mass-labeled electricity bills take people out on the streets, and the protesters eventually overthrow the Bulgarian government.

THE ROMA AND VALERI SIMEONOV (EX-VICE PM OF BULGARIA)

In 2014, Roma protestted against the racist speeches of Valeri Simeonov from the National Assembly’s rostrum, and against such rhetoric by the then Health Minister Petar Moskov. Almost no one paid serious attention, and the protests of the Roma were unnoticed and unsupported by other representatives of society.

In 2018, mothers of children with disabilities protested against Deputy Prime Minister V. Simeonov again after his speech. We remember that his resignation came to an end.

THE ROMA AND MEDIA

In 2017, a group of Vidin Roma from the facebook group “Angalutne” organized a peaceful protest against the hatred in Vidin and Bulgaria and published their declaration. One of the points in the statement reads: “We draw attention to the fact that quality media is required to present information at least from two points of view. Very often the second point of view is missing or the media are inviting people who have neither the capacity nor the willingness to solve the problems. This is particularly true for events involving the Roma, when they are inviting the same people to look for not objectivity, but sensation“. Perhaps it is unnecessary to mention how many people are familiar with the text of the declaration.

On April 23, 2019, Hristo Komarnicki wrote in the facebook profile: “Yesterday, on a national television broadcast, a confused youngster announced that all Gypsies, Turks, Armenians, Jews were ”guests“ in Bulgaria to the ”masters“ and should be very careful. No, my dear “journalists,” this is not “freedom of speech”, with such shameful materials you will not compensate for its deficit. There are topics on which the civilized part of humanity has reached agreement and which are not questioned. What to expect next? Interview with a patriotic entrepreneur who founded First Private Concentration Camp?“

The issue here is not an isolated case. This group also includes the speeches of Tomislav Donchev’s wife after the pogroms against Roma in Gabrovo, the analysis of school violence by actors and athletes in the morning talkshows of the national media and others.

THE ROMA AGAINST THE FAR-RIGHT, POPULISM AND HATE

In 2017, Roma submitted a petition to the European Parliament against Atanas Djambazki, a Bulgarian MEP from the far-right VMRO party. The Committee on Petitions does not pay attention to the call for the deputies to disseminate ethnic hatred to be dismissed.

Early in 2019, President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, said in an Italian radio broadcast that Mussolini had done positive things about Italy. Of course, there is a reaction, but without real consequences.

In July 2019, during the first plenary session of the newly elected parliament, representatives of far-right and populist parties turned their backs during the anthem of Europe.

A FASCISM? ARE YOU DAYDREAMING?

Let’s go back to the beginning of the text and to what has been written, and in particular to two things: 1) It may be isolated cases here. 2) No one should be held responsible for any foreign acts (for example, all citizens of the country should be guilty of anti-social messages on social networks).

Firstly, although Roma protests in Europe are paying attention to, to call them, individual cases, this is not all about this at all. Let us for a moment agree with the hypothesis that the far-right event of a few months ago in Bulgaria (https://www.foxnews.com/world/far-right-leaders-rally-in-bulgaria-ahead-of-eu-elections) was unacceptable and that it was already “condemned” by some Bulgarian institutions. However, it needs to be addressed in a more general context. It should also include: the purposeful creation of a comfortable media environment, the deliberate dehumanization of parts of society, the creation of ordinances and strategies, sometimes promoting white-race superiority or white supremacy (stopping aid to children whose parents are without secondary education, reminds the passage of securing a future for the white race), the swallowing of small political parties from the ruling party, the successful silence of reason in separate and comfortable niches, limiting our actions only in registering the events. And above all, the elite racism that I recently wrote about.

Secondly, of course, no one can be held responsible for any other acts. But we all have a duty to humanity and the preservation of basic democratic principles. And as far as fascism in Bulgaria is concerned, little overprotection does not seem superfluous.

And last. What is this material actually telling us? Does it imply that the Roma are special and have, frankly, the magic gift to predict events? No, not at all. The article is nothing more than what it says in its title. Because each of the listed injustices begins with the Roma, but never stops or limits its action to the Roma neighborhoods alone. And if we do not take measures such activities can easily destroy the core idea of United Europe.
